Learning and building on Workday Extend is free: Workday's Developer Program FAQ answers "Does it cost anything?" with "No. The program is free!", and anyone can create a personal developer account. Putting an app to work for a customer is a different matter, because that happens in the customer's own tenants under their Workday Extend subscription, and Workday publishes no price for that subscription.
What the free personal account gives you
Workday's glossary describes a Personal Account as a free account that is not tied to any customer or partner organization, open to anyone, for exploring and learning. Through the Open Developer Platform program you can request one Development tenant. The FAQ lists what comes with the program:
- A Development tenant, through the open access beta
- Developer documentation, APIs and SDKs
- Learning content and training
- The developer community and forum
What you get is bounded rather than priced. The tenant is a beta with limited availability, it expires after seven consecutive days without activity, and you can hold one at a time. The exact limits are in the getting started guide, and the personal versus company account guide lays the two account types side by side. Neither is repeated here.
What needs a Workday Extend subscription
Three things in Workday's own documentation point back to a customer's subscription rather than a personal account.
Development tenants for a company. Workday's glossary says Development tenants are issued to customers with Workday Extend subscriptions, and that only Company Administrators can create and delete them. Personal Account users can create their own, but those expire.
Promotion beyond Development. Workday's Extend overview says Personal and Enterprise Accounts can both build iteratively in a development tenant, while enterprise customers move apps through the later phases and install them in production. On the Developer Site console, promoting apps and installing them on non-Development tenants is listed for Enterprise Accounts. A personal account's documented tenant is a Development tenant, so Implementation, Sandbox and Production belong to the customer's side.
Some tooling. The Developer CLI is available to all Developer Site users, but Workday notes that not every command completes successfully without access to the Extend SKU. Workday does not say which commands. See the WDCLI guide for the command set.
What needs Flex Credits
Anything that uses Workday's AI agents is metered separately from the Extend subscription. The prerequisites of Workday's custom agent guide state that Workday AI agents require the use of Workday Flex Credits. How credits are counted, and what the public rate card does and does not say, is covered in the Flex Credits explainer, and how to plan a budget for a customer is in the budget planning guide.
For a personal account, treat this as a question to ask Workday before you rely on it. The documentation says AI agents need credits; it does not spell out how credits apply to a personal account's Development tenant.
Which situation are you in?
| You want to | What Workday documents |
|---|---|
| Learn Extend, or try an idea | A free personal account with one Development tenant |
| Build a prototype to show a client | The same account, with sample data only and the seven-day expiry |
| Deploy an app into a client's tenants | The client's Workday Extend subscription and their company account |
| Use Workday's AI agents on a customer tenant | Flex Credits, under the customer's agreement |
Who to ask about the price
Cost for a customer deployment is set in that customer's agreement with Workday, and Workday does not publish a list price for Extend. If a client asks you what it will cost, the answer is to ask their Workday account team, not to quote a figure from a blog post, including this one.
