On October 13, 2026, at Workday Rising, Workday opened Workday Extend to individual developers: "Anyone can now create a personal developer account on developer.workday.com. You'll join the Workday Developer Program and can set up your own personal Workday development environment to build at your own pace (currently in Beta)." For anyone who has wanted to learn Extend without a customer or partner sponsoring them, that sentence removes the main barrier.
Building on Workday used to need an invitation
Workday said as much itself. When it opened a waitlist pilot on August 27, 2026, its announcement began: "For most of Workday's history, building on the platform required an invitation. You needed someone to vouch for you—a customer, a partner, an employer who could grant access."
In practice, that meant you learned Workday Extend on a client's project or not at all. A consultant between engagements, an admin curious about Extend, or a student had no tenant to practise in. The pilot replaced the invitation with a waitlist. Seven weeks later, the October announcement let anyone sign up.
What a personal developer account includes
Workday's documentation is specific about what a personal account, which it calls a Personal Account in its Open Developer Platform program, gets:
- One Development tenant. You request it from the Developer Site, and Workday emails you when it is ready, usually within 15 minutes.
- Sample data. Development tenants use Workday's staged sample data, and Workday recommends never putting personal data in them.
- A 7-day rule. The tenant "expires if you don't log in to it for 7 consecutive days."
- Limits on new tenants. One active Development tenant at a time, and no more than two created within six hours.
The account is a place to learn and build. It isn't a copy of anyone's production Workday.
Why now: Workday is betting on agent-built apps
The same announcement made Developer Agent generally available as part of Workday Extend AI. Workday describes it as a way to build Extend apps and agents from a plain-language description, from the AI tools developers already use. Workday reports that since it unveiled Developer Agent at DevCon in June, "more than 125 early access customers and partners have used it to build over 6,000 custom apps and agents."
Opening the platform to individuals widens the pool of people who can build those apps. Workday's August post made the case in numbers for one market: more than 1,800 Workday customers operate in India, and "a single hiring site lists over 4,000 open Workday developer jobs in India."
Who gains the most
- Independent consultants. You can learn Extend, keep your skills current between engagements, and build a prototype without asking a client for access.
- Functional consultants and admins. Workday's August post described a cohort where half the new developers "knew Workday as users or functional practitioners but had never touched the developer side." In under 48 hours, Workday says, the new developers went from a cold start, on tenants they had only just been given, to a working app.
- Students and career changers. Workday's developer site also points students to its Developer Learning Network for courses and labs, alongside the new personal accounts.
What stays the same
- Client work still happens in the client's account. A company account belongs to a Workday Extend customer, whose Company Administrators decide who is in it. Implementation, Sandbox and Production tenants belong to the customer.
- A personal account stops at Development. The tenant Workday documents for a personal account is a Development tenant with sample data, so an app built there runs on sample data, not a real organization's business processes and security.
- It is a Beta. Workday's own words. Expect the details to change.

Where kiweely fits
kiweely is a desktop app for Workday developers, consultants and admins, and it works with personal Workday developer accounts. You describe the app; kiweely designs it, has Workday validate every version, deploys it to your Development tenant once you approve, and tests it as each person who will use it. It runs on your own ChatGPT or Claude plan or an OpenRouter key, and Kiweely Personal is free.
