If you build on Workday (Extend apps, Studio integrations, orchestrations, WQL), there are now several AI tools that can help. "Free" means something different for each one, so here is what each costs and where it runs.
The short answer
- Workday Developer Agent is Workday's own agent. It's available in App Builder on the Developer Site, and through the Developer Agent Extension in VS Code-compatible IDEs (VS Code, Cursor, Antigravity) and in Claude Code. It builds and edits apps and agents from natural language, validates its own work and helps debug. It doesn't configure security: Workday says you configure security in your tenant after you deploy. Access depends on your Workday developer account and program. (Developer Agent overview)
- Claude Code and Cursor are general coding agents. Neither is Workday-specific out of the box. With Workday's Developer Agent Extension or wdcli they can edit app source and run CLI commands. You pay for the Claude or Cursor plan you use.
- kiweely (that's us) is a desktop app for Mac and for Windows 11 (from Microsoft Store). Kiweely Personal is free for one person, on their own computers: no card, no trial. It runs on the AI account you already have: your ChatGPT plan, your Claude plan, an OpenAI or Claude API key, or OpenRouter. You pay that provider as you do today, and we don't mark it up. Teams and firms need a paid licence, priced by quote. On Mac, kiweely 1.0.19 also builds and publishes Workday custom agents, keeps several ChatGPT and Claude accounts saved (one in use per plan), and lets several conversations work on one app at the same time.
What each can reach
| Developer Agent | Claude Code / Cursor | kiweely | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | Developer Site App Builder; VS Code-compatible IDEs; Claude Code | Your terminal / IDE | Desktop app (Mac; Windows via Microsoft Store) |
| Builds Extend apps | Yes | With Workday tooling | Yes: designs, validates, deploys to your Development tenant, then tests in a real browser |
| Studio integrations / XSLT | Not its focus | Edits files; no Studio run | Drives the Workday Studio on your computer: build, test, deploy, run, debug |
| Security configuration | Not configured (per Workday docs) | Manual | Plans access as part of delivery; asks before every change |
| Workday custom agents | Builds .agent / .agentskills in App Builder or IDE |
With Workday tooling | On Mac (1.0.19): creates or opens Agent apps, publishes, reports registration, activation and who can use it |
| Several client tenants | Per developer account | Manual | Each client's tenants kept apart; a conversation uses only its own |
| Cost | Per Workday program | Your Claude/Cursor plan | Free for one person; your own AI plan |
When to pick which
- You live in App Builder or VS Code and mostly need component generation: start with Developer Agent. It's Workday's tool and knows the platform.
- You already pay for Claude Code or Cursor and are comfortable with wdcli: add Workday's extension and keep your setup.
- You want the deploy, test and fix loop handled against a real tenant, Studio work in the same place, or several clients kept apart: try kiweely. It builds on the same strong models and works signed in as you.
These tools can be used together. kiweely can run alongside Developer Agent, and your Workday account decides what any of them can see.
FAQ
Is kiweely really free? Yes. Kiweely Personal is free for one person on their own computers. There's no card and no trial, and nothing to cancel. You pay your AI provider for your own plan. Teams and firms use a paid licence, priced by quote.
Does kiweely run on Windows? Yes. It runs on Windows 11 64-bit, installed from Microsoft Store, and on Apple silicon and Intel Macs.
Which AI models does it use? Whatever your account offers: your ChatGPT or Claude plan, an OpenAI or Claude API key, or OpenRouter. Your plan's own limits apply. On Mac, from 1.0.19, you can save several ChatGPT and Claude accounts and use one per plan.
Is kiweely made by Workday? No. kiweely is an independent product from OnoeX LLC and isn't affiliated with or endorsed by Workday.
Do I need a company tenant? No. A Workday Open Developer Program account comes with a Development tenant, and kiweely works in it.
